The Inspiration
Several years ago, I knitted myself a basic hat inspired by a pattern from the Garnstudio website, but tweaked to my own style. Yet another pattern I never wrote down!
I loved it because it was gray and matched everything. Plus, its relaxed shape gave off a vibe I absolutely adored.
Sadly, I lost it on a hike during the holidays. By the time I realized it had fallen out of my pocket, someone else had already picked it up... I searched everywhere, retraced my steps, but it was gone. It had clearly been adopted by a new family.
RIP my favorite gray hat! The only thing left of it is this photo taken about an hour before it disappeared.
I get it, though—it was so cool and incredibly soft... because, as you might have guessed, it was made from my favorite material: alpaca!
But I wasn’t going to let it get me down! So, when I got home, I started brainstorming its little sibling...
That’s how the Twin Hat came to life! And lucky for you, this time I wrote the pattern!
The Pattern
The pattern is worked in stockinette stitch from the bottom up, with a hem of approximately 8 cm/3.1 in.
Material: Approx. 100 m/110 yards of "super bulky" quality alpaca. For substitution, I recommend choosing a main material with structure, such as wool.
Needles: 6.5 mm/US10.5 double-pointed needles or equivalent to achieve the correct gauge.
Gauge 10 x 10 cm or 4 x 4 in: 15 stitches x 18 rows.
Finished sizes: 19 cm/7.5 in high and 50 cm/19.7 in in head circumference (2 cm/0.8 in ease).
The Instructions For The Model
Don't forget that if you encounter any difficulties, the pattern is available as a video tutorial on my YouTube channel, Terrifiknits! https://youtu.be/VH03d7ypCcM
- Cast on 72 stitches with 6.5 mm/US10.5 double-pointed needles.
- Place a marker and join in the round, ensuring the stitches are not twisted.
- Continue in 1x1 ribbing for 15 rounds or 8 cm/3.1 in.
- Switch to stockinette stitch for 18 rounds or 10 cm/4 in.
- On the next round, place 4 markers spaced 18 stitches apart (make sure to use a different marker to indicate the beginning of the round).
- Decrease one stitch after (slip one stitch, knit the next, and pass the slipped stitch over) and one stitch before (knit two stitches together) each of the 4 markers = -8 stitches, leaving a total of 64 stitches or 16 stitches between each marker.
- Knit one round in stockinette stitch.*
- Repeat from * to * a total of 6 times = 24 stitches or 6 stitches between each marker.
- On the final round, knit together the 3 stitches after (slip one stitch, knit the next 2 stitches together, and pass the slipped stitch over) and the 3 stitches before (knit three stitches together) each marker = 8 stitches or 2 stitches between each marker.
- Cut the yarn, leaving about 20 cm/8 in, and thread it through the remaining 8 stitches. Pull tight.
- Weave in the ends and block.
And there you have it, your Twin hat is finished! Now, all that's left is to test it out in real-life situations!
