The Toudou Scrunchie, Free Pattern

Good Resolutions

The beginning of the year often brings reflections and resolutions.

In the knitting world, we review our completed and unfinished projects from the past year, envision what we want to achieve in the coming year, and most importantly, we pledge not to continue buying yarn and finally tackle our stash, the famous stash!

One of the most annoying things is when there's one skein or less of a color left. We are often at a loss because few projects can be accomplished with less than 200m of yarn.

Well, I suggest one here: the Toudou Scrunchie!

The Toudou Scrunchie

I chose to create an ultra-soft version in angora to bring a touch of chic and offbeat style to this rather casual accessory. I designed it in an XXL format, allowing it to be used, notably, at the base of a bun.

In any case, it is very easy to customize, for instance, by changing the needle size for a finer scrunchie or a child's size. The key is to maintain a width x length ratio equivalent to the model shown (i.e., a length 5.5 times greater than the width) to preserve the crinkled effect.

The Toudou Scrunchie has the advantage of using approximately 80m/87.5in of yarn, or even less if you opt for a smaller version. So, it's a fantastic option for creating with even the smallest quantity of available yarn.

Additionally, the good news is that I've created a YouTube tutorial to guide you through making this model:

The Pattern

The pattern is worked in the round in stockinette stitch and seamed after inserting elastic inside.

Material: 80m/87.5in of Fine quality yarn. I used angora for the model in the photo.

Needles: Double-pointed needles 3.5mm/US4 or equivalent to achieve the correct gauge.

Gauge 10X10 cm, 4x4in: 21 stitches X 26 rows

Finished sizes: 7.5cm/3in  wide by 40cm/15.7in high"

The Instructions

Don't forget that if you encounter any difficulties, the pattern is available as a video tutorial on my YouTube channel, Terrifiknits!

  • Cast on 40 stitches onto one needle, then distribute them evenly onto 3 needles.
  • Place the stitches in a circular manner and start knitting in the rounds, making sure that the stitches do not twist.
  • Move the stitches from one needle to another at each round to avoid creating holes between the stitches.
  • Place a marker at the beginning of the round. Also, place a fixed marker in the middle of the round (20st).
  • Continue knitting in this manner, moving the round beginning marker along with each round.
  • Knit until the work measures 40cm/15.7in. Place a marker in the middle of the last round (20st).
  • Cut a piece of elastic to the desired length. Here, it is 10cm/3.9in.
  • Insert the starting yarn end inside the headband after cutting it, leaving it approximately 4cm long.
  • Insert the elastic inside the band and use the marker to secure it at the entrance.
  • Cut the yarn, leaving enough yarn to complete the seam.
  • Match the markers for the middle and the beginning of the round and begin to sew : pass the needle under the first stitch of the first row and then through the first stitch of the last row. Let this stitch slip off. Pull the yarn tightly to ensure an invisible seam.
  • Once the seam is finished, weave in the yarn end and remove the markers.

And there you have it, you've finished your Toudou Scrunchie! Now, it's time to test it out in the real world!
